The main challenge of current PEM electrolyzer development is to lower the costs, and the general approach is to (1) use less of those expensive materials, such as membrane, catalysts and titanium and stainless steel; (2) reduce components’ fabrication costs, for example, the precision machining of bipolar plates; (3) increase current density; (4) introduce automation and (5) scale up to high volume production. Equally important is to reduce the costs of balance of plant (BOP), as it comprises 40-45% of system costs.
Janus Tech’s technologies include:
Novel cell/stack design. Janus has demonstrated a design that virtually eliminated machining of bipolar plates and using minimal stainless steel, increased usage rate of membrane, and developed simple and effective seal technique to allow operation of high pressure (>30 bars).
High current density. Janus’ proprietary high current density technology allowed operation of >5A/cm2
Novel design of BOP subsystems. Janus has designed and demonstrated low-costs, water circulation system, water-gas separation and gas drying systems…
Systems testing and characterization. Janus has developed effective techniques and capabilities, allowing testing and characterization of each individual components, such as membrane, catalysts and GDL, and processing procedures, such as catalyst coatings in fully integrated systems, with elevated temperature and pressure, gas purity measurement, hydrogen production efficiency (kWh/kg), as well as gas crossover analysis…
